Five star superior hotel Eden Roc is an ideal destination for discerning families or couples seeking a holiday that will at once allow them to unwind while keeping them active and entertained.

At Eden Roc guests will enjoy direct lake access, beautiful sprawling gardens, extensive sport and leisure offers, a 2000 m2 spa, four different but equally enticing restaurants and a legendary service.

But, what will stand out more than anything is that this hotel, located in Switzerland’s Italian-speaking town Ascona, provides guests with a unique blend of Switzerland and Italy, cherry-picking the best of Swiss hospitality standards and combining it with a colourful Italian flavour, best expressed through the flamboyant and unexpected design elements and the thoughtful culinary specialities.

A major attraction of Eden Roc is the vast options of sport and leisure options – it is fair to say there is something for everyone. This is partly the reason why the hotel has been recognised for the seventh consecutive year by SonntagsZeitung as “Switzerland’s best holiday hotel” (2017) and now by the Connoisseur Circle as “Best Lake Hotel in Switzerland” (2017).

For those seeking pure relaxation, the Spa area offers an indoor and outdoor pool (with views over the lake), a hydro-pool with whirlpool recliners and soothing massage jets, a Kneipp-path and various saunas and a steam baths. For a deeper relaxation there are also a wide range of treatments available, including Ayurvedic treatments, Aroma Oil massages and rejuvenating offers with Sensai, Clarins, Dermalogica, OPI & La Biosthétique products. Inside the rooms, you will be presented with a beautiful light and airy atmosphere, a delightful selection of fragrances and a massage or beauty offer suited to your needs.

For those desiring a more exhilarating experience, there are also numourous options to choose from. Whether it is reclining in the hotel’s stately Riva Aquarama as the skipper takes you around the lake, taking one of the hotel’s sailing boats for your own expedition or kayaking, stand-up paddling and water skiing, the hotel will cater to your needs from its very own private harbour.

One adventure that we would personally recommend is a trip to the Brissago Islands. The hotel concierge can schedule a trip for short or longer visits. With just two hours to spare, we took one of the hotel’s private boats to the island with a skipper and – joined by a guide from the tourism board – we explored the unique subtropical Botanical Gardens. Despite being visible from Hotel Eden Roc, the island offers a very different climate. Here we were led through a world of fauna – with each section representing a different region in the world – from the South African proteas to Chinese bamboos and Australian Eucalypts. It truly is a unique experience and we would recommend an extended stay for the afternoon to enjoy lunch at the local island restaurant.

For those guests wishing to explore even further afield, Hotel Ascona also has a variety of bikes, Vespas and even an electric Smart car, all which can be reserved without an additional fee. Furthermore, Edel & Stark, a leading premium car rental based in Switzerland has a partnership with the Tschuggen Group, the parent company of Hotel Eden Roc. Available at Edel & Stark’s rental prices, these exquisite cars will make your holiday that much more exceptional. We highly recommend renting out one of their vehicles to enjoy the drive to and from the hotel. We drove their Maserati GranCabrio Sport MC from Interlaken to Ascona (they can facilitate a car drop off from around the country and have a wide selection of vehicles) and it was a terrific experience with extraordinary views, enjoyable mountain passes and the ideal choice for a refined Swiss holiday with an Italian touch.

A positively surprising element of Hotel Eden Roc is the colourful and unexpected design features that you will find around every corner. As a result, the hotel itself is an adventure through design, thanks to the local celebrity designer Carlo Rampazzi. As the hotel manager Andreas says “the design is unexpected because we want you to experience an environment that is very different to your home”. Indeed it does captivate attention and inspire one, whether it is the new fish carpets in one wing, the individually designed guest rooms or the new wall feature that pops with modernity and vibrant colours.

When it comes to the guest rooms, there are a wide variety on offer – each unique and 80% with lake views. Every room has an inviting interior with its own colour themes, furnishings and modern comforts, which is a welcome juxtaposition to the relatively retro exteriors. We personally recommend suite 201, which gazes over the exquisite lake and boasts a 270-degree view and two balconies. But whichever room you choose, there will likely be pleasant surprises – such as the table of fruit and specialties that were waiting for us upon entry, including a lovely bottle of Rosato Di Merlot from Ticino.

If you happen to be inspired by the designs at Hotel Eden Roc, we highly recommend you take a visit to Atelier Selvaggio, where you will be able to explore Carlo Rampazzi’s showroom and see his experimental interior design creations.

Hotel Eden Roc has four restaurant options, each with their own unique flavours and all overlooking the spectacular Lake Maggiore. At La Brezza, the signature restaurant with 17 GaultMillau Points offers creative suggestions and menus, including a five course Champagne pairing menu. Restaurant Eden Roc with 15 GaultMillau points offers French-inspired classic options, Marina is a more relaxing Riviera-inspired alternative with a wide range of options, including grills and finally La Casetta offers delightful Mediterranean and fish dishes.

We were particularly impressed with the creativity, presentation and flavours presented at La Brezza. Chef Salvatore Frequente interprets Sicilian cuisine with seasonal and regional products and we had the good fortune to try the exceptional five course Champagne paired menu. Some of our highlights were the Mediterranean amberjack paired with Blanc de Blancs Brut, a tender Normandy sole paired with Rosé Brut and the Rhubarb dessert variation paired with Carte Blanche Demi-Sec.

We were also pleasantly surprised by the range at the breakfast buffet, which included a wide choice of fresh juices and fruits as well as a truly extensive selection of cheeses, fish and meat, which were chiefly from the region and all presented with Swiss precision.

There are many reasons to visit Eden Roc, but make sure to check the event schedule with the concierge to find a time that best suits you. The region has much to offer in terms of events, including the neighbouring renowned Locarno film festival and jazz festival, as well as the special events at the hotel. But regardless, whenever you come you will be delighted by the little extra touches. For us it was  the live singer and pianist on the first night (this is organised every Friday), performed by a local singer. Touches such as these immediately transport guests into holiday mode and set the scene for the delights to follow.

Andreas Gartmann and his team were splendid hosts. They are a welcoming and knowledgeable team with a depth of experience in hospitality, but a flair for pleasantly surprising guests and taking care of the little extras that make such establishments extraordinary.

We are grateful for our experience of Hotel Eden Roc and, after this experience, very much look forward to exploring the other hotels in the Tschuggen Group.
